About this service
GPR surveys to detect voids, washouts and poor compaction beneath concrete slabs, tarmac and paved surfaces. Early detection prevents costly structural failure and safety incidents — particularly important for highways, car parks, warehouses and industrial floors.
How GPR Detects Voids Beneath Slabs
Ground-penetrating radar transmits a pulse of electromagnetic energy into the ground and records the reflections from subsurface features. A void — whether caused by water erosion, poor compaction or ground movement — produces a strong, characteristic reflection that is clearly distinguishable from solid material. We scan in a grid pattern across the survey area to build a complete picture of subsurface conditions, identifying the location, approximate depth and lateral extent of any voids present.
When to Commission a Void Detection Survey
Void detection surveys are most commonly commissioned when floor slabs show signs of movement, cracking or deflection; before major plant or racking installations on industrial floors; as part of pre-purchase due diligence on commercial or industrial property; following nearby excavation or groundworks; and on highways or car park decks where surface defects suggest underlying loss of support.

Frequently asked questions
- What causes voids beneath concrete slabs?
- The most common causes are water erosion washing away fine material from beneath the slab, poor compaction of fill material during construction, ground settlement or subsidence, and leaking drainage pipes that erode the surrounding soil over time. Voids can develop gradually over years before any surface signs appear.
- Can GPR detect all types of void?
- GPR is highly effective at detecting air-filled voids beneath concrete slabs. Water-filled voids also produce a strong reflection. Very shallow voids (less than 50mm below the slab soffit) and voids in heavily reinforced slabs can be more difficult to resolve. We will advise on the likely detection limits for your specific site conditions before the survey.
- How deep can GPR detect voids?
- In typical ground conditions, GPR can detect voids to depths of 1–2 metres below the slab surface. Penetration depth depends on the ground material — dry sandy soils allow deeper penetration than wet clay or contaminated ground. We select the appropriate antenna frequency for each survey to optimise depth and resolution.
