About this service
Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) surveys to assess concrete quality, uniformity and the presence of cracking, honeycombing or voids — without damage to the structure. Used for condition assessments, dispute resolution and quality control on new and existing concrete.
How UPV Testing Works
An ultrasonic pulse is transmitted through the concrete between two transducers. The time taken for the pulse to travel through the material is measured and used to calculate the pulse velocity. High-quality, dense concrete transmits the pulse quickly; cracked, honeycombed or deteriorated concrete slows the pulse and reduces the velocity. By mapping pulse velocity across a structure, we can identify zones of poor quality, cracking or internal defects.
Applications of UPV Testing
UPV surveys are used to assess concrete quality on new construction where mix or placement issues are suspected; to map the extent of fire damage or freeze-thaw deterioration in existing structures; to identify honeycombing or voids in columns, walls and beams; and to provide supporting evidence in disputes about concrete quality or workmanship.

Frequently asked questions
- What does UPV testing measure?
- UPV testing measures the velocity of an ultrasonic pulse travelling through concrete. Higher velocities indicate denser, higher-quality concrete. Lower velocities indicate cracking, voids, honeycombing or deterioration. The results are used to assess concrete quality and uniformity across a structure.
- Can UPV testing replace core sampling?
- UPV testing is a non-destructive screening tool that can identify zones of concern across a large area quickly and without damage. It does not directly measure compressive strength. Where UPV results indicate poor quality, targeted core sampling is often recommended to confirm the findings and obtain strength data. The two methods complement each other well.
- Is UPV testing suitable for all concrete structures?
- UPV testing is suitable for most concrete elements where both faces are accessible (direct transmission) or where a single face is accessible (indirect transmission). It is less effective on very thick sections or heavily reinforced elements where the reinforcement can mask the concrete signal. We will advise on suitability for your specific structure.
