About this service
Low-strain pulse echo pile integrity testing to identify necking, voids, cracks and defects in foundation piles without excavation. Suitable for bored, driven and CFA piles — providing confidence in foundation quality before construction progresses.
How Low-Strain Pile Integrity Testing Works
A small impact is applied to the pile head using an instrumented hammer. The resulting stress wave travels down the pile and is reflected back by any changes in cross-section, material quality or the pile toe. A sensor on the pile head records the reflected wave, and the data is analysed to identify the location and nature of any anomalies. The test is non-destructive, requires no excavation and can be completed quickly — typically 10–30 piles per day depending on access and pile type.
When is Pile Integrity Testing Required?
Pile integrity testing is most commonly specified as part of a quality assurance programme on new piling works, when visual inspection of the pile head reveals signs of defects, when settlement or movement is observed after piling is complete, and when existing piles are being incorporated into a new structure and their condition is unknown.

Frequently asked questions
- What defects can pile integrity testing detect?
- Low-strain pile integrity testing can detect necking (reduction in cross-section), bulging, voids, cracks, soil inclusions and major changes in concrete quality along the pile shaft. It can also confirm the approximate pile length where the toe reflection is clear. It is not able to detect minor surface defects or assess the bearing capacity of the pile directly.
- How many piles can be tested per day?
- Typically 10–30 piles per day depending on pile diameter, access conditions and the time required to prepare each pile head. Pile heads need to be clean, sound and accessible. We will agree a realistic programme with you based on your site layout and pile schedule.
- Is pile integrity testing destructive?
- No. Low-strain pile integrity testing is entirely non-destructive. The impact applied to the pile head is small — similar to a firm hammer blow — and causes no damage to the pile or the surrounding structure. No excavation is required.
