Basement Plant Room GPR Scanning, London

The Brief

A contractor needed to know what was in the floor of two basement plant rooms before starting new works. One room held the electrical plant. The other held the fire water tanks, pumps and generator.

What We Did

We scanned both rooms with a Proceq GP8000 GPR, combining 2D line scans and 1 m × 1 m 3D grids to a depth of about 900 mm.

What We Found

~120 mm

screed over a multi-layer build-up of about 400 mm, with voiding at the screed/slab interface

Ground beam

downstand ground beam beneath the screed areas

~600 mm

RC plant slab cast in two pours, with a cold joint at ~300 mm and two layers of reinforcement

Possible piles

vertical responses beneath the plant slab consistent with piles

Where GPR Stops

The void under the screed masked the signal below it. Rather than guess, we told the engineer which layers were interpreted and which were proven. We recommended targeted cores, borescope checks and covermeter readings to confirm the full build-up before anyone drills.

The Outcome

The engineer received an engineering report with annotated 3D scans, section drawings and a clear drilling status for every zone, along with a defined scope to close the remaining gaps.
